English couple start English restaurant in Lyon,
gastronomic capital of France. We all know about
grey boiled flavorless English food, right?
We hear about starting a restaurant, refurbing
the buildings, dealing with vendors, local hoods,
an initially incredulous clientele, the difficulties
of success, etc. Compared by many to
Mayle's A Year in Provence,
it too is a memoir of an Englishman who moved to France.
But the topic and tone are very different. Mayle's a
better writer, but this book is somehow more real.
The restaurant is
Mr. Higgins in the
Croix Rousse district in Lyon. I've never been there.
